Prabowo’s State Visit to Korea Highlights Symbolic Gift Diplomacy

Seoul — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to South Korea has drawn significant attention, not only for its formal diplomatic agenda but also for the symbolic exchange of gifts between the two leaders. This moment went beyond protocol and reflected a deeper narrative of cultural respect, identity, and shared values in international relations.

From Indonesia’s side, Prabowo presented a selection of culturally meaningful items that highlight the nation’s heritage. The centerpiece was a gold-plated kris, a traditional dagger symbolizing bravery, authority, and spiritual strength. Accompanying this were a Balinese carved plaque featuring the Garuda emblem and a traditional ceramic jar, each representing Indonesia’s artistic richness and historical continuity.

In response, South Korea prepared gifts tailored to Prabowo’s military background and interest in martial traditions. A traditional Korean archery set known as gukgung was presented alongside an English edition of a classical Joseon-era martial arts manual. Additionally, a cake shaped like the number eight was offered, symbolizing prosperity, balance, and good fortune in many Asian cultures.

The highlight of the visit was the awarding of the Mugunghwa Daehunjang, South Korea’s highest national honor, to President Prabowo. This prestigious decoration is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations. Analysts interpret this gesture as a strong affirmation of the strategic importance of Indonesia–South Korea ties.
